Oppe said one of the reasons for change was the shift in traffic patterns due to Corridor D's construction, which moved some traffic off WV 95.
The store moved into the former Big Bear building, which also houses Ollie's Bargain Outlet, has more than doubled the space of the original building. That provided more room for specialty foods, frozen foods, produce, seafood, meat and other sections of the store.
" The store is doing very well. We're pleased with sales and it's continuing to grow," he said.
Oppe said the stores pride themselves on their local roots and community service.
"We are the local guys. We continue to support a lot of local organizations and groups and we are very proud of what we can give back. We're able to do that through the continued support of our customers," he said.
"We are also very proud of our staff, we have a great base of employees that continue to perform above and beyond, nothing is possible without them. I'm only one person. From our management staff on down to the part-time folks, we are all committed to customer service," Oppe said.
While the company celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2008, Oppe became involved in March 1995 when he purchased his first store.
Foodland is a full service grocery store. Among its services are fresh-cut meat daily, a service Oppe believes is declining elsewhere. Oppe said the stores also purchase as much seasonal local produce as possible.
"We're
the local guys. This is home to us," he said.
